MOSQUE OF DJENNE
Columbia GSAPP / ADR / Fall 2023
Instructor: Zachary White
Drawing Process
The mosque of Djenne has been standing for a long time. However, due to constant flooding, replastering is essential to keeping the building standing. And thus, the surrounding community has an annual replastering festival in which everyone participates. Consequently, the building becomes a catalyst for social cohesion, and the layers of time can be seen visually by the organic appearance of the mosque.
To express the accumulation of time and the layers of mud on the building, I expressed the layers of time peeling off from the building and leading to a ununiform appearance of the building.
